LED and Natural Lighting

Conventional lighting treats electricity as the only way to deliver light. It is not. The combination of natural light delivery and LED at matched colour temperature changes what a building's lighting system costs to run -- and what it does to the people inside it.

Two systems, one lighting environment

What we deliver

HNordic installs two complementary lighting technologies that are designed to work as a single system.

Linear LED -- industrial and marine. High-output linear LED specification for commercial and industrial interiors and marine environments. Designed for the load profiles and durability requirements of spaces that run continuously: warehouses, production floors, port facilities, vessel interiors. The LED element is the supplement -- the source that covers what natural light cannot reach, and the fallback when natural light is not available.

Natural light delivery. A solar-capturing prism on the building exterior captures daylight and directs it through light cables to luminaires installed inside the building. No electricity. No running cost. Light from outside, delivered to interior spaces that would otherwise have no connection to the outside environment at all.

The two systems are integrated at the luminaire. The LED element is tuned to match the colour temperature of the natural light being delivered at any given moment -- so the light in the room shifts through the same spectrum as the day outside, from the warm tones of morning through the cooler midday light and back again. The transition between natural and LED sources is seamless. The occupant experiences one consistent lighting environment, regardless of which source is supplying it.

The mechanism

The prism is installed at a point on the building envelope -- typically the roof -- where it has unobstructed access to the sky. It captures direct and diffuse daylight and concentrates it into a light cable: a fibre or cable assembly that carries the light through the building structure to wherever the luminaire is positioned.

The luminaire can be installed in a room with no windows, no skylights, and no direct relationship to the building exterior. Basement spaces, deep-plan offices, internal corridors, operating theatres, animal housing -- locations where the standard answer has always been artificial light running continuously are now locations where daylight can be delivered directly, without electricity, for as long as the sun is above the horizon.

The LED supplement activates when natural light falls below the required level -- at night, in overcast conditions, or when the natural light supply alone is insufficient for the task. Because the LED is matched to the colour temperature of the natural source, the occupant experiences no visible transition.

Natural light has measurable effects on the people and animals in a space. The buildings where those effects are most significant -- and where the OpEx case for zero-electricity lighting is also strongest -- are the ones this system is built for.

Hospitals and clinical environments

Patient recovery, staff alertness, and circadian rhythm regulation are all affected by light quality and spectrum. Natural light delivered to interior clinical spaces -- wards, treatment rooms, corridors -- addresses a problem that artificial lighting cannot solve regardless of its efficiency.

Agriculture

Animal housing and farming

Livestock productivity, welfare, and health outcomes are directly linked to light quality and photoperiod. Natural light delivery to enclosed animal housing removes the dependency on artificial lighting for biological light requirements -- reducing both OpEx and the welfare gap between indoor and outdoor environments.

Commercial

Deep-plan offices and interior workspaces

Open-plan offices with perimeter glazing leave interior desks in permanent artificial light. Natural light delivery changes the working environment for the people furthest from the facade -- with no structural modification to the building required.

How we work

The assessment

Lighting is the one technology in our portfolio where the assessment is structural before it is electrical. The position of every natural light luminaire depends on the building -- its roof access, its structural layout, the location of interior spaces that cannot receive daylight by any other means, and the routing available for the light cables between the prism and the luminaire.

The assessment maps the building: existing windows, room positions and dispositions, interior spaces with no natural light access, roof or facade points suitable for prism installation, and cable routing paths through the structure. From that map, we identify the locations where natural light delivery is physically viable and where it will produce the greatest change in the lighting environment.

The LED specification follows from the same assessment -- sized and positioned to complement the natural light layout, not to replace it.

No two buildings produce the same result. The assessment is the prerequisite.

How it fits

Within the integrated system

Lighting load is one of the data streams the AI energy management system monitors across the property. Where natural light delivery reduces the hours the LED supplement needs to run, that reduction flows directly into the consumption figures the system tracks and reports.

In a building that also carries generation and storage, LED demand can be timed against battery availability and tariff windows. The natural light component operates independently of all of this -- it has no electricity demand to manage.
